Are you seeing how limitless the list of "home business idea for woman" is?

As your going about your process for choosing your home business, consider what some of the advantages and disadvantages are for having a business from your home.

    Advantages

  • You can work part-time.
  • You can have a more flexible lifestyle.
  • You can spend more time with your family.
  • The start-up and ongoing operating costs are typically much lower.
  • Depending upon what type of business you choose, you might save money on childcare. But be careful here. Meaning, if you have small children, avoid getting in the trap of thinking that you can work while you're caring for your children. If staying home with your children is one of the primary reasons you're starting a home business, then pick a business that you can do when they are sleeping.
  • Ahhh, you can say good bye to your commute.
  • You can work day or night.
  • You are your own boss.
  • You have more of an outlet for your creative talents.
  • And, one of my favorites: You can work in your pajamas!

Let's look at some of the possible disadvantages to having a home based business for women. Why? So you can prepare and put things in place to minimize or eliminate possible disadvantages.

    Disadvantages

  • You might loose some space in your household when setting up your office. Click on home office for some suggestions.

  • Personal and family lifestyle patterns may be disrupted. Talk about your business with those with whom you live. Discuss what anticipated changes will be and how everyone might help in making those transitions easier for everyone.

  • You may have less privacy compared to where you've previously worked. Again, discuss this with those with whom you live. For example, when I thought my children where old enough to handle "mommy working at home" I dropped the daycare and babysitters. I explained to my children, "Your mom works from home. When my office door is open you're free to come in and talk to me. When the office door is closed, you can not interrupt me unless it's an emergency." They got it and I make sure I thank them when they do not interrupt me when my office door is closed.

  • Depending upon which business you choose, you may work long hours.

  • Having your own home business means not having some of the more tradition benefits that come with working for a company, such as, paid health care and dental insurance premiums, paid vacation, or paid sick days.

  • You might experience stress and tension in trying to balance family and business needs.

However, my experience and many of my clients' experiences have been that with proper handling many of these types of issues can be worked out.

You may have to try a few things before you find what works best for you. For example, one of my clients first tried making phone calls to her customers from 6PM to 7PM. However, she soon discovered that this was an hour in the day that she enjoyed spending time with her 2 year old daughter and husband when he came home.

So, she decided to make her phone calls during the day. But, this turned out not to work out well because, too often other things got in the way. So, she tried making her phone calls once she put her daughter to sleep at about 8PM every night. That proved to work out well for her.

    The key here is to:

  • Find your own balance between your business and personal life.
  • Develop good time management skills.
  • Set priorities.
  • Establish necessary boundaries.
  • Allow time for fun.
  • Make sure that you establish an atmosphere of open communication with your family. They can help support you in building and managing your business and in achieving your goals.

Here are some additional suggestions that may help.

    Tips for Success

  • It takes time to build a business.

  • Get the word out there about your business. Network and ask friends and family to help by referring people to you.

  • Considering hiring a business coach. You can get free business related counseling from organizations such as the SBA (Small Business Association) and SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives). However, you may find that you want more guidance than what these organizations can provide. Find out what the benefit of having a business coach is to see if having a coach is for you.

  • Set aside a specific time each week to marketing your business (in addition to telling your family and friends about it) so that your business continues to expand. Then, when you're making the kind of money you set out to make, continue marketing efforts that will enable your income to stay at that level.
